Important Notes for 2018:
This year the Canterbury Woods Swim Team, the “C-Serpents”, will be in Division 10 out of 18 Divisions in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL). There are 6 teams in each division. This year, we will compete against Somerset Olde Creek, Annandale, Virginia Hills, Highland Park, and Great Falls (for A meets). For our B meets, we remain in the Woodson League, and will compete with local pools, Long Branch, Rutherford, Truro, and Fairfax. Maggie Neubig will return for her 4th season as our head coach.
The NVSL was first organized in 1956 and has grown over the years to be one of the largest organized swim leagues in the entire country. More information about NVSL can be found at http://www.mynvsl.com/ Canterbury Woods is proud to be associated with such a fine organization.
The “C-Serpents” welcome you to become part of the swim team and we accept all different experience levels of swimmers. You could just be starting out to swim or you could be a junior Olympian, but the “C-Serpents” will embraced you as a member of the swim team. The “C-Serpents” participate in both the “A” meets, which are scheduled on Saturdays, and the “B” meets, which are scheduled on a weeknight. The swim team pep rallies are usually held at the Canterbury Woods Swimming Pool on the Friday night prior to a scheduled Saturday “A” meet.
REGISTRATION: If you haven’t already, please register online at https://cserpents.swimtopia.com. You must be a registered swimmer (and a member of the CW pool) in order to participate in practice. We use the team's SwimTopia website exclusively to send out emails and swim team notifications. The website is also your source for all information related to the swim team.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE: You can find this on the website under “About/Practice Schedule.” Starting Tuesday until school is out, practices will be every evening (M-F) from 5:00 to 7:00. Ages 10&Under will be from 5:00-6:00, and ages 11&Up will be from 6:00-7:00. Super Serpents won’t start until school is out, so be patient little ones!
REMIND APP: As you know, summer evening weather can be tricky. Our team uses the Remind app for quick notification of practice delays or cancellations due to weather. Please make sure you have downloaded the app and are registered for the “C-Serpents” class: http://remind.com/join/cserpents.
SWIM TEAM CLINICS: We will be hosting two stroke & turn clinics at CW Pool for our regular swim team swimmers (no Super Serpents yet!). The first will be on Saturday, June 2, and again the following Saturday, June 9. Both clinics will be from 10:00-11:00am. We hope you can come!
SUITS: We are using the same team suits as last year (no need to purchase a new one if you child's old one from last year still fits and is in decent shape). However, kids grow. For anyone who would like to purchase a new team suit, please contact Diane Adams-Strickland (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information. Suits are payable by check to “Sport Fair."
NVSL OFFICIALS CLINICS: If you’re interested in learning more about one of the deck official positions (Stroke & Turn, Starter, Referee, etc.), the NVSL is offering training sessions starting next weekend. Please see the clinic schedule on the website. For more information about being a deck official, reach out to Bill Brocato at Bill.Brocato@gmmb.com.
PARENTS’ MEETING: Monica and Diane will be having a brief parents’ meeting in the CW Pool pavilion on Friday, June 1 at 6:00 (between the two practices). This is great for new families to learn more about the swim season, the difference between A & B meets, what it takes to run a meet, and more. We hope you can join us!
MEET ATTENDANCE & VOLUNTEER SIGNUPS: The swim team doesn't happen without volunteers. We are hosting 5 meets this year (3 A meets and 2 B meets). We need a minimum of 35 volunteers for each meet just to make the meet happen. Some positions require NVSL training in advance of the season (deck officials, starter, referee, etc), while there are other jobs that only require you to show up and bring positive energy (concessions, etc).
